Ahmad Faraz was a prominent Pakistani Urdu poet and author. He was born in Kohat, British India (now

Pakistan), on January 12, 1931, and died in Islamabad, Pakistan, on August 25, 2008.

Ahmad Faraz Shayari is renowned for his revolutionary and romantic poetry, frequently addressing love,

grief, and social justice.

During the 1960s and 1970s, he acquired widespread popularity in Pakistan and India, and his poetry is

still widely read and admired today. Among the many notable works by Faraz are “Tanha Tanha,” “Shab-

e-Khoon,” and “Janan Janan.

Early Life and Education

Faraz was born into a Pashtun family and showed an early interest in poetry and literature. He attended

Edwards College in Peshawar and later graduated from Peshawar University with a Master’s degree i

Persian and Urdu.

His educational background and early exposure to classical Persian literature significantly

influenced his poetic style.

Literary Career

Faraz’s literary career took off in the 1950s when he began publishing his poetry. His first notable

collection, “Tanha Tanha,” published in 1958, established him as a prominent voice in Urdu poetry.

His subsequent collections, including “Dard Ashob,” “Nabeena Sheher Mein Aina,” and

“Shayad,” further cemented his reputation.

Faraz’s poetry is known for its emotional depth, lyrical beauty, and exploration of themes such as love,

longing, resistance, and social justice. He was often compared to the legendary poet

Faiz Ahmed Faiz for his revolutionary spirit and commitment to speaking out against oppression and

injustice.

Political Activism and Exile

Faraz was an outspoken critic of authoritarianism and military rule in Pakistan. His bold stance against

political repression led to his arrest during General Zia-ul-Haq’s regime. He was imprisoned for his

outspoken views and spent time in self-imposed exile in various countries, including the UK, Canada,

and Europe. Despite these challenges, he continued to write and publish poetry that resonated with

people across the globe.

Ahmad Faraz Shayari received numerous awards for his contributions to literature, including

the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Imtiaz, two of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors. His work continues

Later Years and Legacy

Faraz returned to Pakistan after the end of Zia’s regime and continued to write and engage

in literary activities. He served as the chairman of the Pakistan Academy of Letters and the

National Book Foundation.

He passed away on August 25, 2008, leaving behind a rich legacy of poetry that continues to inspire and move readers.
